From Garden to Plate:

My Homegrown Tomatoes & Favourite Bruschetta Recipe

There is something truly magical about picking a tomato that's been warmed by the summer sun which we have had plenty of this year. No supermarket tomato can compare to the sweetness, the incredible flavour, and that satisfying feeling of eating something you've grown yourself.

This year our garden has rewarded us with an abundance of tomatoes. Watching tiny yellow flowers slowly transform into green fruits before finally turning vibrant shades of red, orange and yellow has been one of the highlights of the season. Every evening I wander into the garden with a cup of tea to see which ones are ready to pick.

Growing tomatoes has taught me patience. They seem to spend forever staying green, and then almost overnight they're ready to harvest! The wait is always worth it.

One of my favourite ways to enjoy freshly picked tomatoes is keeping things simple. When the ingredients are this fresh, they really don't need much. Bruschetta has become our go-to summer lunch or light dinner, especially when we've picked tomatoes, basil and garlic from the garden.

My Favourite Garden Bruschetta

Ingredients

- 4 large ripe tomatoes (homegrown if possible!)

- A handful of fresh basil leaves

- 1 clove garlic

- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

- Salt and freshly ground black pepper

- 1 crusty baguette

- Optional: balsamic glaze for drizzling

Method

1. Dice the tomatoes into small chunks and place them in a bowl.

2. Finely chop the basil and add it to the tomatoes.

3. Crush or finely grate the garlic and stir it through.

4. Add the olive oil, season with salt and pepper, then leave the mixture to sit for 10-15 minutes so all the flavours come together.

5. Slice the baguette and toast until golden.

6. Spoon the tomato mixture generously over each slice.

7. Finish with a drizzle of balsamic glaze if you like.

Serve immediately while the bread is still crisp.

Why I Love Growing Tomatoes

Growing your own food isn't just about saving money. It's about slowing down, spending time outdoors, and reconnecting with nature. There is something incredibly satisfying about creating a meal where the main ingredients have travelled just a few metres from the garden to your kitchen.

Every tomato reminds me that good things take time. They begin as tiny seeds, need regular care and watering, and eventually reward you with the most delicious fruit imaginable.

If you've never tried growing tomatoes before, I'd encourage you to give it a go. Even a single plant in a pot can produce an amazing harvest.

And if you're lucky enough to grow more than you can eat, you'll never run out of excuses to make another batch of bruschetta!

Happy growing, and even happier eating! 🍅🌿
